Stevie Wonder

It took until the final song, but finally, Stevie sang Happy Birthday to me. Topped off a pretty good day really. I am generally not a convert to all these old stars from the 60's and 70's still banging out their old tunes, but you gotta hand it to him - Stevie Wonder's, at 60 odd years, is still going strong. On a lovely evening at Yas Island Arena Stevie cranked out most of his hits ably supported by a thirteen piece band, a fabulous light show and great sound. Dedicating the show several times to the tragedies in Japan he had the crowd in the palm of his hand, singing and dancing away to all those well known soul classics from over the years, including a brief funky Chuck Berry number where Stevie freely improvised telling us about not knowing all the words and an extended instrumental piece by Chick Corea.

Photos of Qatar

Qatar is an interesting place and it was an experience to be savoured looking back on the two years we lived there. Some days were diamonds, some days things got up your nose - like the dust ( literally ), the mad driving, the infuriating delays in getting simple things accomplished. Retrospect being like it is some of those things just become hilarious like the small road outside our apartment block which after a year of roadworks was still not complete, at the time it was a major inconvenience. They have 11 or so years before the Football World Cup and I just hope they at least use another roading company!!!
The following photos show some of the beauty and diversity of the place and the people.

From left to right, top to bottom they are:

Film set at Zikrit, baby camels, dhow on the Corniche
Friday fish market, back end of a bus, boat building
New State Mosque, rainbow sunset, dhows at Ruwais
